How to reduce your impact
Real Nappies (washables)
• buy organic cotton nappies; organic means that pesticides or chemical fertilizers were not used in growing the cotton; that means no harm to your baby, the farmers, the water supply in the farmers’ village, or the cotton field itself.
• Use flushable liners and flush solids down the toilet
• Always wash a full load and wash at 60 degrees.
• Choose nappies with shorter drying time or try not to dry in a dryer.
• Use eco friendly laundry liquid or ecoballs.
Disposables
• If you do use disposable nappies, use the gel-free alternative, Tushies, and flush solids down the toilet before disposing. Flushable liners in your Tushies make the job a lot easier!
• Try and avoid nappy sacks – and especially if they’re artificially perfumed. Re-use your old shopping bags if you must!
• Toilet train your child as soon as you can!
Both sides of the argument
Almost every product we buy has some sort of impact on the environment. The challenge is to get informed and decide which alternatives are better. No nappy is without some environmental impact. Washables need to be washed, disposables need to be disposed, and both use energy to get the job done!
