Question: I am considering green nappies but not sure I have the time and patience, are they as fiddly as they seem?
Answer: Forget any preconceived ideas about washable, reusable nappies being leaky, uncomfortable for your baby or difficult to put on. Modern reusables also called cloth or *real* nappies are as easy to use as disposables and they save you money; you can kit your baby out with all the nappies they need for under £80 (the cheapest terry nappy option), add £1 a week to wash them and you will still save £500 compared to disposable nappies. The savings in costs and for the environment are even better when real nappies are used on a second baby as many families do.
The incredible choice out there means you can choose the style you like from traditional terry nappies that you fold, to all-in-ones that go on in exactly the same way as disposables (see greenbaby.co.uk).
And there are some brilliant real nappy incentive schemes designed to lessen the cost, ask your local council for details. There will also be a number of promotions and events to tie in with Real Nappy Week, 26 April to 3 May 2010 (see goreal.org.uk).
Where you may find these nappies most time consuming is in the extra washing full time use can add up to an extra load once or twice a week.
That said, even using washable *real* nappies once a day makes a huge difference to the environment and saves about 800 disposable nappies in landfill per baby.
So even if you just want to use nappies at home, then switching to disposables at night or when you go out, you really will be making a great contribution.
Our range of washable nappies has been selected for comfort, effectiveness and after feedback from our customers, both mail order and in our stores.
If you need any advice on what to buy please call us on 0870 241 7661 between 9am and 5pm weekdays.
We look forward to hearing from you and helping you to choose real nappies.
